THE DELI
Smiley's opened the Deli in March of 1990.
Since we purchased the Store in 1987 there had been several owners of the Pizza
Parlor that just couldn't get it to work. My parents had owned 2
restaurants in Upstate New York and I had worked in them since the age of 10.
I love to create and cook so I decided that we should take down the wall and
open what is now known as Smiley's Pizza, Subs, etc...
My parents taught me many things about the food
industry but the most important thing they taught me was that Food did not have
to have a-lot of additives to be good. They taught me the art of using
spices and herbs to give food taste. Most of Smiley's food has no
additives! We cannot control the pre-made items such as some of our fried
foods but we can control the quality of what we purchase.
Coming from Upstate New York big servings are a
staple. If you didn't eat enough for 3 people you were going to die!
That is the one problem we have at Smiley's...some of our servings are way too
much. We keep saying we are only here to feed you..not stuff you!
You will always get your monies worth at Smiley's!
THE
BREAKFAST
DAYS AND HOURS:
Breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 7am-10am. Saturday and
Sunday from 8am-11am.
THE FOOD:
We serve a full service breakfast from Breakfast Sandwiches to Pancakes and
Omelets. All of our food is made FRESH with REAL eggs. None of our
food ever touches the microwave! We have Breakfast Sandwiches made and
placed in the Pizza Warmer up front. They are never there longer than 15
minutes. If you wish you can have a sandwich made fresh while you wait.
THE SPECIALS:
FREE Medium Coffee with any Breakfast Meal. Large Coffee and Breakfast
Sandwich $1.99.
THE SERVICE:
We at Smiley's do not try to kid ourselves about how busy breakfast should be.
We know that people would like to sit in a nice restaurant with cloth
tablecloths and table service. We cannot offer that. We have an old
building that our landlord just will not put money in and after 22 years we
refuse to put any more money into his building. What we can promise you is
that Smiley's is one of the cleanest restaurants that you will find in Dover.
We can also promise you one of the BEST breakfast you will ever eat! The
company isn't too bad either. We even serve on GLASS Plates with real
silverware. So stop by and try us out! If you are not 100% satisfied
we will refund your money.
NOTE:
If you are having a Breakfast Business meeting and would like Breakfast
delivered Smiley's can do that for you! Please give 24-36 hour notice so
we have a driver available. We can also obtain Pastries such as cinnamon
rolls, donuts and muffins that are homemade. We have also been working on
delivering Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. The problem we are running
into is that Breakfast Food gets cold really fast. We are trying to figure
out how to keep it hot and fresh for delivery. Be prepared for an
announcement soon!
THE DELIVERY
THE DELIVERY AREA:
We deliver to
most of Dover and Rollinsford. If you are not sure if we deliver to you
please give us a call. There is a delivery charge of $1.00 of which 100%
goes to the driver. Some of the areas have a minimum order from the deli.
These are places that are furthest away. If your unsure if you live in
that delivery zone call and ask.
THE DELIVERY TIME: Please
give us ample time to deliver your food. What I am surprised at is that
many people do not know that we deliver anything from the store with a Deli
Purchase. Yes we deliver Tobacco, Soda, Grocery items, Beer, Wine, Health
and Beauty Aids, well just about everything we carry in the store except for
Kegs! Of course proper ID required for the purchase of tobacco and beer.
We do limit the beer to 1 case per address. Because of the above we
sometimes cannot and do not have the delivery times of other area places.
It takes time for our drivers to shop for you, ring it all up in the register,
bag it and get it out the door. We try to have it there within 45 minutes
but sometimes due to the weather or being busy it takes a bit longer. We
do try and tell you when the deliveries are backed up but please try to
understand when we don't.
TIMED DELIVERY: The best way
to guarantee that your food will be there when you need it is to call ahead of
time and ask for a delay. We promise to have your food there within 10
minutes of your requested time. This is especially helpful to businesses.
CREDIT CARDS: We do accept
all credit cards except American Express. Please have your card and
drivers license ready for when the driver gets there. They will need to
see both before giving you your order. When the driver gets to know you,
this will no longer be necessary.
HOURS OF DELIVERY: We deliver
from 11am to Close daily. We may begin to deliver Breakfast on the
Weekends but we have to figure out a way to keep the food hot. Breakfast
tends to get cold very fast.
THE FOOD
THE PIZZA: Smiley's
Dough has NO additives. It is made
with unbromated flour. Read about the reason why this is so important to
many customers

some customers that cannot tolerate Gluten can eat Smiley's Pizza. We also
use unbleached flour

is that Smiley's dough is completely natural. We at Smiley's believe that
food should be made and eaten the way the earth intended it to be. The
only other ingredients are yeast and water. That's it! No
preservatives, no oil, no egg. There is no reason to add anything to the
Dough except to extend the shelf live of the product. We do offer our
Dough Balls for retail sale so you can make your own pizza at home. This
dough is also very good for homemade bread.
The Sauce has
NO additives. It is made with FRESH tomatoes, spices and water. It
has no salt added. We do add some sugar which equals about pinch per
serving. We make it FRESH daily.
The Cheese
has no additives. It is a 3 Cheese Blend of Mozzarella, Cheddar and
Provolone cheese. This blend prevents the "grease" that forms on the top
of cheese pizzas. If you use a cheaper blend or a cheaper cheese you will
get the yellowing and the grease on the top of your pizza.
HOW THE PIZZA IS COOKED:
Smiley's Hand Tosses all of their pizzas, yes even the
Extra Large one. When you hand toss a pizza it helps to re-activate the
Yeast making for raised crust. This is why sometimes you see inconsistent
Pizza's from Smiley's. The Taste is always the same but sometimes the
crust is not. The Dough has to be "proofed" just right and sometimes when
it is busy the dough has not had enough time to proof so there is not as much
"active" yeast as with a perfect proofed dough. This is the same with an
over proofed dough. We place the Dough on a screen that is sprayed with
100% vegetable spray. The spray has NO calories and NO peanut oils.
This is why Many people especially children can eat Smiley's Pizza. It is
then baked in a Brick oven to perfection!
THE CALZONE: Smiley's
Calzone is made the same as a pizza. Same
Fresh ingredients, same way of cooking. It's HUGE! It's GOOD!
FAQ'S
1. My child has nut allergies, can they eat
Smiley's Pizza: Yes! If you inform us that someone has an allergy to
nuts or flour we will prepare that pizza away from the normal Pizza line
preventing cross contamination. We use an unopened bag of Cheese and any
vegetables or meats that are unopened and unused. This is our 100%
guarantee that your Pizza will NOT come in contact with any ingredients that
someone may be allergic to.
2. Why does it sometimes seem like your
Pizza is undercooked? As mentioned above our dough is a bit different than
most places. The crust is suppose to rise to form a nice rim around the
pizza. The Dough is made to be "light and airy" which sometimes makes it
appear as being undercooked. Smiley's DOES NOT under cook their pizza's at
any time. You can ask for it to be cooked a bit longer if you desire.
3. Why is the bottom of my Pizza Light or
Dark? We use screens to cook our pizzas in a Brick Oven. Sometimes
when it is busy the brick cools down and we have to take the pizza off the
screen to "finish" the bottom. This tends to lean towards uneven cooking.
We will Never send out a "burnt" pizza but at times the bottom of the pizza will
be darker than the top for reasons stated above.
4. Can we order a Par Baked Pizza and
finish the cooking at home? Yes! When you order as them to Par Bake
the Pizza. Cooking instructions are: Bake in a 400 degree oven until
done. To brown the bottom of the pizza bake it on a Dark metal Pan or you
can purchase a NEW pizza screen from us that can be reused.
5. Sometimes I get my pizza on a Cardboard
circle and sometimes on a Wax paper, Why? Smiley's tries to be as "green"
as we can be. With the amount of Pizza's that we make in a day we would
use a-lot of Cardboard circles. We decided that because the circles cannot
be recycled due to it being contaminated we started using Sub wrap to line the
boxes. This takes up a-lot less space in our landfills then the circles
do.
6. If I purchase a 5 item pizza versus a
loaded pizza why does it cost so much more? With many of our Specialty
Pizza's the items are priced as 1/2 items. A pizza is difficult to fully
cook when there are 4 or 5 items on top so we put 1/2 of the items on the pizza.
Let's say a Chicken and Broccoli pizza has 6 oz of Chicken so a Down on the
Ranch would have 3-4 oz of Chicken.

THE SUBS: The
Bread. Smiley's Subs always start with a FRESH roll. Our
Bread is made by Piantedosi. This bread is made from the finest
ingredients. They are baked with high
protein flours and pure vegetable oils. They are also cholesterol and
preservative free, Kosher and Pareve. You will always get FRESH bread from
Smiley's. We have many different types to choose from. Small and
Large Sub rolls, White and Wheat Wraps, Gluten FREE Wraps, Sour Dough and Rye
Bread. Our Bulkie Rolls are made Fresh Daily and are very yummy! We also
have Wheat and White Bread.
The Meat is
the best you can buy without the big name. If you had a sandwich at
Smiley's 15 years ago, you will have the SAME sandwich today! We do not
believe in purchasing the "cheapest" meat because it's on sale. Our
Ham is imported and is 97% fat free. It has
no additives. Just plain and simple Ham. Our
Turkey is 100% Smoked Turkey Breast. It is not "Pressed" or contain
any "fillers". Our Salami is 100% Genoa.
It also has no "fillers". Dried to perfection and not too spicy! Our
Lean Roast Beef is just that, Roast Beef! It is the best on the market
without the Big expensive name! It Our
Shaved Steak is the leanest available. In fact we are known to call
the company if the meat appears to have too much "fat" in it. It needs to
have some "fat" to enable it to cook on a hot grill without looking like
shredded chipped beef. We do not add any oil, butter or fat to our Steak.
When you order a Steak sandwich that's what you will receive! Not
something dripping with fat. Our Steak Tips are 100% Sirloin. They
are the top of the line. We purchase these from a company where the owner
actually does all of the cutting. I met him at a food show and the pride
that he has for his product speaks volumes to me. If I ever have a problem
with his product, I can call him and he will take care of it. The
Pastrami is also the best that you can buy.
It is very lean and contains no fillers. Our Ground
Beef is 85% lean. When we make your burger we cook it slowly so it
maintains the juice inside of the burger. We try not to cook them to
"death" however we have to cook them to medium or well done. The
Chicken is 100% White Chicken Breast. The
meat is trimmed so there is no visible fat. We cook it Fresh daily.
We do not add and preservatives to "keep" it longer. Our
Hotdogs are 1/4 pound Hotdogs and 100% beef.
Our Bacon is no longer the pre-cooked bacon.
We cook it fresh 2 or 3 times a day. It is the best on the market! I
have never tasted Bacon like this! If you haven't tried it lately, it is a
must! Our Sausage (Hot or Mild) is well,
sausage. Not much to up talk on this one.
The Cheeses.
We have several different cheeses available to you for your sandwiches. We
have American, Swiss, Provolone, Cheddar, Feta Ricotta and of course our 3
cheese Pizza blend. You can choose any of the above at no extra cost.
All of our cheese is sliced daily.
Other Items.
Our Tuna Salad is made with Mayonnaise and 100%
White Tuna. That's it. Our Chicken Salad
is made with 100% Chicken Breast, mayonnaise and celery. No salt or
additives. Our Egg Salad is made with Real
Egg not frozen. It contains Eggs and mayonnaise. All of these are
made Fresh Daily.
FAQ'S
1. What items do you put on your
subs? Items included are Cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions, green pepper,
hot peppers, and tomatoes. Black Olives are a charged item as is mushrooms
or anything not included in the above.
2. What subs do you toast? All Steak
and Cheese including tips, Chicken Finger Subs, Pastrami, Sausage Subs and
anything with Pizza or Pasta sauce. You can request any sub to be or not
be toasted.
3. Your daily special of 2 Footlong Subs
states Menu Subs only, what does this mean? This means nothing EXTRA can be
added. Yes we understand that most people are willing to pay the extra
however that is what the special states.
4. I ordered cheese on my hot sub but I
don't see it, why? With our hot subs we place cheese in the roll and we
also "melt" the cheese into the meat on the grill.
5. Can I make up any sub that I want?
Yes and we encourage it! Sometimes people order something and it sounds
really good so we put it on our menu.
6. How come on the menu all of your subs
are not listed? We have a-lot of subs that we make for our regulars but
our menu can only be so large. If you want a sub but you don't see it on
the menu, ask us and I am sure we can make it for you.
7. Most places skimp on their meat and
cheese, why doesn't Smiley's. When we first opened the deli we decided
that if you were going to purchase from us, you were going to get your monies
worth. Through the years we have stuck with that concept! We try to
give you the USDA recommended serving amounts with our subs.

THE FRIED FOODS: First about the
Oil we use. We DO recycle our oil into
bio-fuel. Our oil contains no Trans Fat. It is 100% Soybean oil.
Of all of the oils we studied we found Soybean oil to be the best on the market

It is also Gluten Free. In small amounts, Fried Foods are not that bad for
you. It's the food you put in the oil that you have to be careful about.
Our French Fries both the Regular and the Spicy are
made from 100% Maine potatoes and contain no additives. Our
Onions Rings are beer battered and HUGE!
People come from miles around just for our Onions Rings. The batter is
very light and not too crispy when cooked. Fried
Ravioli are breaded just breaded cheese ravioli with a bit of seasoning.
They are really yummy! Mozzarella Sticks is
just breaded cheese. No additives to this item either.
Fried Mushrooms are just breaded mushrooms with a
bit of seasoning. Jalapeno Poppers are
Jalapenos, with cheese and a bit of breading.
Macaroni and Cheese Wedges are breaded macaroni with some cheese.
Our Chicken Fingers and
Buffalo Fingers are 100% white breast of chicken breaded. No
fillers at all. The Buffalo Fingers are soaked in our homemade hot sauce
and served. Our Boneless Chicken Wings are
100% white breast of chicken with no fillers. Our Wings are breaded 100%
chicken wings. Nothing added to make them "plump".
Fried Dough Balls are probably our most healthy
fried food on the menu. We start with our dough, fry it, put sugar,
cinnamon, very little butter and confectioners sugar on it and shake it!
These are the BEST item at Smiley's! All of our Fish
items are 100% with no additives. The clams are the necks not the bellies,
the haddock is 100% breaded haddock meat and the Shrimp is breaded Shrimp.
The 3 piece Chicken dinner is the Breast, The Leg
and the Wing. It is 100% breaded chicken with no additives.
FAQ'S
1. Do any of your fried foods contain additives.
Yes! Most of the additives are to keep them crisp throughout the cooking
and serving process. We try to limit the additives that are in the foods.
Very little of our fried foods have MSG (which BTW can and is listed under
several different names). We try to limit the amount of MSG that can be
contained in any of our foods. If you are allergic to MSG (I am) please
ask which foods have it and in what amount. I have never had a problem
with the food here but many of the Fast Food places I cannot eat any of their
fried foods.
2. Can you fry other things besides what is listed on
your menu? Yes but ask Joe. He is the King of the frying! He
fries anything and everything..yuk
3. How often do you change your oil? We filter the
oil daily and change the oil every 2-3 days. This ensures that you receive
the best food possible from Smiley's.
4. I am a vegan, can you cook me something in the fryer?
You know we tried that and it just didn't work out. We could not promise
someone that meat had not been cooked in the side we used for "vegans" only so
we have stopped that. However, many of our items can be baked so if you
are a vegan and would like something off our menu ask us if we can bake it.
5. What is the difference between a dinner and an item?
An item contains more of the Food and only the food. The dinner includes
the food, french fries, roll, cole slaw and sometimes a 20oz drink.

THE PASTA: All of our Pasta Dinners come
with Homemade Garlic Bread and Side Salad. You can add meat to any of your
dinners for an added cost. All of the stuffed Shells and Ravioli are 100%
Fresh with no additives. We will be revamping our Pasta menu soon.
KIDS MENU: This is the same great food
that we serve to adults but we add a cookie and a drink. These are only
available with a full priced adult menu item. These are not available to
be delivered to your office. We placed these on the menu to help parents
out and help save them a bit of money. We request that you respect our
rules with this item.
DELI ITEMS FOR RETAIL:
We offer all of our deli items for retail sale at low prices. We have to
maintain an inventory anyway so why not offer them for re-sale? Do you
have a large function or a party that you need to purchase large amounts of an
item? Call us first before heading to the BIG BOX store or to the
WAREHOUSE CLUBS, we usually beat their prices. We have Gallons of Salad
Dressing, Pickles, Sauces, Hot Peppers and so much more. We also offer all
of our Meats and Cheeses for retail. See the list

weddings, parties or just for people to use at home. We are also known to
sell our Pizza boxes for projects in the schools.
